Negros Power always goes above and beyond electricity as they serve the community. In celebration of World Ocean Day, the company joined the Mangrove Planting and Coastal Cleanup Activity organized by the City Environment Management Office (CEMO) of Bago City last June 9, 2025, at Purok Calubay, Barangay Sampinit.

The Importance of Mangrove Planting and Coastal Cleanup

The environmental activity gathered approximately 200 participants from various government agencies, private organizations, community groups, and volunteers. These concerned groups showed unity to promote coastal conservation and environmental protection.

As part of the initiative, a total of 5,000 mangrove propagules were planted along the coastal area to help strengthen shoreline protection, improve marine biodiversity, and contribute to climate change mitigation efforts. The mangrove species planted included Bakhaw Bato (Rhizophora stylosa), Bakhaw Babayi (Rhizophora mucronata), Bungalon (Avicennia rumphiana), and Avicennia marina (Grey Mangrove).

Mangrove forests play a vital role in protecting coastal communities from erosion, storm surges, and the effects of climate change while serving as breeding grounds and habitats for various marine species. The successful planting of 5,000 mangrove propagules will help strengthen the coastal ecosystem of Barangay Sampinit and contribute to long-term environmental sustainability.

Moreover, the participants also conducted a coastal cleanup drive, collecting trash along the shoreline to help preserve the health of coastal ecosystems and raise awareness about environmental responsibility.

According to Unice Castillon, Community Relations Assistant Manager of Negros Power, environmental conservation aligns with the company’s commitment to serving communities beyond providing reliable electricity service.

Protecting our environment is a shared responsibility, and activities like mangrove planting and coastal cleanup allow us to contribute to the preservation of our coastal resources while inspiring others to take part in environmental stewardship. We are grateful for the opportunity to join this meaningful World Ocean Day celebration and support efforts toward a greener and more sustainable future,” Castillon said.

Through its participation in the World Ocean Day celebration, Negros Power reaffirms its commitment to environmental stewardship and community development, embodying the spirit of its “Ikaw Ang Una” campaign by putting people, communities, and the environment at the forefront of its initiatives.
