Dr. Andrew L. Tan, chairman of the Alliance Global Group, was recently named Honorary Mayor of Bacolod City. He was also claimed as an Adopted Son of the city. The Alliance Global Group is the mother company of Megaworld, which is now hailed as the largest real estate developer in Bacolod.
Thrilled to be Honorary Mayor of Bacolod
Dr. Tan was conferred the honor by Bacolod Mayor Evelio Leonardia himself during the city’s celebration of the Bacolaodiat Festival.
“Bacolod is the first city in the country that is giving me this title and honor,” says the ecstatic Dr. Tan.

He says it is a great honor for him to become part of a city that is admired as a model in the country. “It is a great privilege to become a part of a city that is admired as a model of other highly urbanized cities in the country.” He is referring to the award that Bacolod City recently received for governance and competitiveness.
Additionally, Dr. Tan congratulated Mayor Bing for having been elected as national president of the League of Cities of the Philippines.
Megaworld has been very supportive of the growth and development in Bacolod City. Aside from the investments they have been pouring into the city for the past several years, they have also gifted the city with the Bacolod Welcome Marker at Northill Gateway: A World-Class Tourist Stop. This is another brainchild of Mayor Bing and is now a favorite photo stop of tourists flying through the Bacolod-Silay Airport.

Bacolaodiat Festival: Chinese New Year in Bacolod
The conferment of Dr. Tan happened last Saturday afternoon at the Bacolod Government Center. Mayor Bing led the recognition rites together with the officials of the Bacolod City Government and the Filipino-Chinese community.

The event also coincided with the city’s colorful celebration of the Bacolaodiat Festival 2020.
Meanwhile, Dr. Tan was also keynote speaker during the Spring Festival Gala held at the SMX Convention Center Bacolod that evening.
Dr. Tan Lauds Bacolaodiat Festival
In his speech during the gala, Dr. Tan expressed his delight over the holding of the Bacolaodiat Festival. He lauded the efforts of the local government in bringing two cultures and peoples together.
It can be remembered that 15 years ago, Mayor Bing started this festival in celebration of the Chinese New Year. He also wanted to celebrate and pay tribute to the strong presence of the Filipino-Chinese community in the city.
“I am delighted to see how the city gathers the entire Filipino-Chinese community in one venue like this.” It is “demonstrating unity amidst cultural diversity,” he adds.
Dr. Tan also congratulated Mayor Bing for successfully holding this festival for more than a decade. “Congratulations to all of you for making Bacolaodiat Festival a landmark festival for Bacolod and Negros Occidental.”
