Negros Electric and Power Corp. (NEPC or Negros Power) is stepping up its power grid improvements with a ₱630 million investment. The upgrades are aimed at strengthening its network and supporting the growing electricity demand in Bacolod City and Central Negros.

What the Next Phase of Power Grid Improvements Entails

The new wave of investment will fund the upgrade of 69-kilovolt sub-transmission lines and the construction of two new substations. According to Vice President and COO Joe-Mel Zaporteza, these projects are part of the company’s five-year rehabilitation plan, which is now in its second year.

Negros Power Vice President and COO Joe-Mel Zaporteza presented the latest improvements the company is implementing during a press conference.

Two new substations are set to rise in Bacolod City—one near the Provincial Capitol and another within The Upper East. These facilities are expected to be operational by late 2026 and early 2027, increasing the total number of substations to 13. Each substation will cost between ₱200 million and ₱250 million, forming a major part of the company’s infrastructure push.

Alongside this, Negros Power is also rehabilitating key sub-transmission lines. One of the most critical upgrades is the Bacolod-Bata 69 kV line, which will see its capacity increase from 126 MVA to 220 MVA. This enhancement will allow the system to handle higher loads and support new developments across the city.

New Developments and a Growing Population Result in Higher Electricity Demand

These power grid improvements come as demand continues to rise, driven by major developments such as Rockwell Center Bacolod and other large-scale projects. With energy consumption growing by around 7 percent annually, the need for additional capacity has become more urgent.

In its first year alone, Negros Power invested over ₱1.3 billion in network upgrades, resulting in significant reliability gains. Power interruptions became less frequent and shorter, reflecting improvements in both system performance and maintenance practices.

While some maintenance activities may require temporary outages, the company said these will be carefully managed to minimize disruption to lifestyles and businesses. At the same time, consumers may not necessarily feel the cost of these investments, as increased demand helps balance rates over time.

With steady progress—already at 39 percent completion in just 19 months—Negros Power’s long-term plan is moving ahead of schedule. These ongoing power grid improvements aim to deliver a more stable, efficient, and future-ready electricity network for Central Negros.
