The St. John’s Institute Alumni Association (SJI-AA) is going to give new hope to 50 poor families of Bacolod City through the 50 Houses for 50 Years Project.

Dubbed as the Msgr. John Liu and Msgr. John Su GK Village Handumanan Sang Hua Ming housing project, this noble effort is in celebration to SJI’s Golden Jubilee celebration in 2009 and is a tribute to the founding fathers of Hua Ming—Msgr. John Liu and Msgr. John Su.

The GK Village will be constructed under the supervision of Gawad Kalinga and Couples for Christ-Bacolod. The houses will be built on a property owned by the St. John’s Institute in Purok Mabinuligon, Barangay Handumanan. The beneficiaries will be identified by the Queen of Peace Parish.

The alumni of SJI have pooled their efforts and resources to gather enough funds and raise up the amount to complete the 50 houses. Aside from merely giving houses, SJI-AA is aiming for a holistic community development for the beneficiaries. The GK Village will feature a Multi-Purpose Hall given by Sen. Juan Miguel Zubiri and a training center as well. These amenities will be utilized for community building activities that will be sponsored by any of the SJI outreach programs in the future.

SJI-AA President William Chua revealed that the groundbreaking ceremonies will be held on June 24, 2008, at 8:30 in the morning at the site itself. This is to coincide with the Feast Day of St. John the Baptist and the birthday of SJI Founder, Msgr. John Liu.

The entire village is expected to be completed by November of this year and the beneficiaries will be able to live in their new homes by January of 2009.

The Msgr. John Liu and Msgr. John Su GK Village Handumanan Sang Hua Ming is a very strategic new development. It is only 200 meters away from the main road and 400 meters from the public market. The PUJ terminal is 500 meters away while the Circumferential Road will be reached in 3 kms. The site is 1.8 kms. from the entrance to Brgy. Handumanan.
