On January 12, 2026, the San Diego Pro-Cathedral in Silay City, Negros Occidental, showcased its newly illuminated and beautifully lit exterior. This special event celebrated the church’s significance within the community and highlighted its rich history as the Paris of Negros. Attendees included numerous church members, local leaders, and Negros Power employees, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.

In Silay City, the San Diego Pro-Cathedral Stands Tall and Proud

Silay City, known as the “Paris of Negros,” boasts a rich cultural heritage, and the San Diego Pro-Cathedral is situated at its heart.

The church is not only celebrating its 100th anniversary, but the Parish of San Diego is also marking its 250th year since its founding in 1776. This makes the church a key part of the city’s history and pride.

A Fitting Ceremony

The program began with an opening prayer and blessing by Rev. Fr. Angelo J. Ansula, the parish priest. Mayor Joedith Gallego addressed the crowd, explaining the importance of the lighting project to the community.

Meanwhile, Engr. Bernard Bailey Del Castillo, Negros Power Chief Technical Officer and Chief Operating Officer, delivered a turnover message, emphasizing the collaborative effort behind this initiative, and was accepted by the Parish Priest.

Rev. Fr. Ansula emphasized the significance of the San Diego Pro-Cathedral not just as a place of worship but as a symbol of hope, truth, and the enduring spirit of the community. “May this light that shines upon our church remind us of hope, truth, and the values we hold dear. This beautiful illumination serves as a reminder of our unity and commitment to uplift our community’s spirit,” he said.

The excitement peaked during the countdown to turn on the lights, with everyone joining in. When the lights finally switched on, the illuminated church created a beautiful scene for photos. This project is proof of how the San Diego Pro-Cathedral, the local government, and Negros Power worked together to celebrate and promote cultural heritage tourism. The teamwork highlighted the importance of local landmarks and community pride.
