Adulting Tips to Ease Your Ascension Into the World of Grown-Ups

For me, I think that the three most important responsibilities of adulting that are not taught in schools or universities may be classified into three. These are financial and domestic responsibilities, and then there’s work ethics.

Many of us graduate from college with big dreams and starry-eyed wonder. We land our first job and we celebrate paydays and weekends. But we are also caught in the liberation that we are off the hook from the responsibilities of school. Being young and with some financial capacity, we take this as a sign that we can let loose.

While it’s okay to enjoy ourselves from time to time as a reward for hard work, there should be a balance. That’s where responsibility comes in and hopefully, some of these adulting tips will help you navigate this new phase.

Financial Responsibilities

Unless you are an accounting graduate, most of us were not taught financial responsibilities in school. And in most cases, the paycheck has already been spent before we have actually received the money.

Budgeting

The first thing that we need to do is to learn how to budget our income. While we were told not to count our chicks before they are hatched, budgeting is simply having a plan for your paycheck. You can list down your expenses so that you know how much you need or where you need to cut corners so that you won’t end up in debt.

Saving and Investing

Consider savings as a reward for your hard work. Take pleasure in seeing your savings grow. Then learn how to invest your money where it will earn bigger yields, like mutual funds.

Buying insurance policies

Once you have a stable income, like when you are now a regular employee at work, you may start considering an insurance policy. There are many reputable Philippine life insurance companies that offer good returns. Consider this as an investment for your future and also for your family.

If you have already saved enough to buy a car and real estate property, have them insured with non-life insurance companies philippines. These are for your protection.

Domestic Responsibilities

For some people, homemaking seems like second nature for them. But for those who are not, you might need to intentionally learn some skills that can be applied at home. These will especially come in handy when you get to live away from home.

Laundry

While there are now many laundry and ironing services that you can pay to get the job done, it is still best to know how to do them. Sometimes, we just find ourselves in situation that we have to do things ourselves. And laundry and ironing are two needs that we need to learn to do.

Menu planning and/or cooking

Of course, you can always eat out. But if you compute your meals in restaurants, you will find that making your own meals and packed lunches can actually save you a lot. Plus, you can choose to eat healthier, too.

Cleaning and organization

If you have helpers at home, you probably have never done cleaning and organizing. But if you live alone or with some roommates, you will need to do these chores. A clean and tidy space will give you peace of mind as well as clarity.

Meanwhile, organization also includes filing your documents and properly scheduling your due dates so that you will not be re-miss in payables your bills.

Use of basic tools

Being handy with some simple tools like cutters, screwdrivers, wrenches, and other tools can really make your life easier around the house.
